General Information:

The Institute of Physics, Beograd, Yugoslavia and the Max-Planck Institute of Physics, Muenchen, Germany are organizing a Summer School in Modern Mathematical Physics. This organization is a part of the WIGV initiative. The School has grown out of a bilateral initiative to establish contacts between German researchers and their colleagues in South East Europe. The organizers thank Germany's BMBF for their financial help.

The School will be held August 13-25, 2001 in Sokobanja, Yugoslavia. Sokobanja is one of the best known Serbian spas, and is located 230 km South-East of Belgrade. Its curative waters are recommended for the treatment of many ailments.

The School's program is oriented to some mathematical methods in Quantum Field Theory and String Theory (noncommutativity, supersymmetry, M(atrix) theory, string field theory,...). The lectures  will be delivered at a level suitable for graduate students in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics.

With the kind help of the BMBF the participants of the Summer School will also have the opportunity to participate in a workshop that will discuss how science financing works in Europe, which are the relevant organizations, how science is managed within the the European Union, how proposals should be written, what special sources are available for South East Europe, etc.

The number of participants is expected to be around 50. Lecturers are asked to each give around 3 lectures. Some introductory lectures on important general mathematical and physical concepts in these fields will be provided by Yugoslav researchers. A set of seminars will also be included in order to connect up different subjects and to give more complete information on recent achievements. Some of the lectures will be published after the School.

The organizers wish to encourage the active participation of young researchers from former Yugoslavia and the Balkan region. The organizers will therefore attempt to cover the stay and travel expenses for these participants as much as possible.

The School's organizers will also take care to:

  • Support Yugoslav experts and young scientists in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics to create an active collaboration and fruitful research in modern Mathematical Physics;
  • Revive connections and collaborations between colleagues from different republics of former Yugoslavia;
  • Improve scientific relations with colleagues from Europe and the rest of the world.

The participants of the Summer school have the opportunity to take part in a related satellite meeting:
